St Brigid’s was founded on Mill Street in 1879. In 1995 that building had to be demolished to make space for a new road. The new church was built a short distance away on Grey Mare Lane.
The parish is an offshoot from St Anne’s Ancoats. Fr Liptrott acquired a site in 1877 to build a school-chapel. The church became independent in 1880 when Fr William Sassen a Dutch priest became the parish priest and served for thirty-five years.
The first church was opened in 1884. A second church was opened in 1901 and the church was re-consecrated. In 1971 the parish hall was opened.
The church celebrated its centenary year in 17979 and in 1995 the last Mass was celebrated in the second church. In August 1995 the first Mass was celebrated in the third church building which was the newly converted church hall.
